King Island — overview

King Island is a remote, two-course links destination in Bass Strait, built around Cape Wickham and King Links, formerly Ocean Dunes. It is the kind of place to fly into, slow down and play golf shaped by wind, coastline and open ground rather than try to rush through on a tight schedule.

Cape Wickham is an 18-hole links course at the northern tip of King Island, routed around the lighthouse and exposed coastline of Bass Strait. Mike DeVries and Darius Oliver used the site’s dunes, rocky shoreline and open ground to create a round where the ocean remains in view from every hole. The course moves from cliff-edge and beachside holes into inland dunes before returning to the coast for its finish.

King Links is the west-coast King Island layout formerly known as Ocean Dunes. Graeme Grant designed the 18-hole course to run through firm, rolling dunes above the Southern Ocean, with six holes directly along the coastline. It is a different visual and strategic experience from Cape Wickham: broader, more open inland corridors give way to bold ocean carries and exposed coastal greens.

What to Expect at King Island

Why visit

King Island makes sense for golfers looking for an isolated, all-links trip with two very different coastal rounds. Cape Wickham sits on the island’s northeast tip with ocean views from every hole, while King Links (formerly Ocean Dunes) is close to Currie on the west coast. The small scale is part of the appeal: fly in, choose a course stay or a private lodge for the group, arrange a car or transfers, and leave room for a replay rather than treating it as a quick add-on. JEL Golf Travel can tailor the flights, golf, lodging and ground logistics around the right pace for your group.

Accommodations

For a group stay, King Island Lodge offers two private four-bedroom lodges for up to eight guests, five minutes from King Links and about 45 minutes from Cape Wickham. Cape Wickham has on-course villa rooms, while King Links offers on-site hotel rooms close to its clubhouse, bar and restaurant.

Resort amenities

King Island is not a single resort complex, so plan the stay around two separate course bases. Cape Wickham combines its course, clubhouse and villas at the northeast end of the island, while King Links has its own on-site hotel, bar and restaurant near Currie. For a group of up to eight, King Island Lodge provides a private four-bedroom base close to King Links and within driving distance of Cape Wickham. A hire car or arranged transport connects the island.

Trip Planning

Flying in is easy; coordinating cars or transfers and lodging early is what makes the stay run smoothly.

Getting there

King Island Airport (KNS) is the gateway, with scheduled regional flights and charter options from mainland Australia. A hire car or pre-arranged transfer is important: there is no public transport, taxis or rideshare network on the island.

Best time to visit

October through April is the most comfortable main window for a King Island golf trip. The links are open year-round, but wind is always part of the experience and winter brings colder, more changeable conditions.

Who it's best for

Buddies trips, couples and dedicated links golfers comfortable with remote travel and weather that can change during a round.
