Hollinwell is the marquee course of the Nottinghamshire heathlands: a large-scale Willie Park Jr. design laid across the rolling valley of Kirkby Forest. Heather, gorse, bracken and woodland frame a demanding par 72 whose natural contours and long championship tees give it the feel of a major inland test. The club has hosted the Brabazon Trophy six times and is an Open Championship Final Qualifying venue.

Sherwood Forest is a classic heathland course routed through the pine, birch and oak of Clipstone Woods. Originally designed by Harry Colt and later enhanced by James Braid, the par 70 is defined by heather carries, 98 local-sand bunkers and a notably demanding inward half. It has hosted the Brabazon Trophy, Open Championship regional qualifying and major England Golf championships.

Coxmoor is an elevated par-73 heathland course whose open, wind-exposed ground provides a different challenge from the wooded courses around it. Tom Williamson and Coxmoor professional Len White shaped the current layout in the 1930s, creating a round with five par 5s, heather-framed fairways and persistent strategic interest. Its firm conditions and championship credentials have made it a regular Open qualifying test.

Worksop is a free-draining, tree-lined heathland course on the edge of Clumber Park and Sherwood Forest. Tom Williamson designed the original nine in 1914 before the course grew to 18 holes, and its sandy ground keeps the turf playable through much of the year. Mature trees, gorse and exacting greens reward accuracy, while the club's championship history includes the 2022 English Amateur.

What to Expect at Nottinghamshire & the East Midlands

Why visit

This is one of England's best short golf breaks for players who value course character over resort spectacle. Hollinwell is the marquee: a rolling, exacting heathland course in north Nottinghamshire. Sherwood Forest adds Harry Colt and James Braid pedigree among pine and birch, while Coxmoor brings an elevated, wind-exposed par 73. Worksop makes an easy fourth round nearby. The courses are close enough to keep driving light, but varied enough to fill two or three days without repetition. Lindrick, the 1957 Ryder Cup venue just across the county line, is a strong optional extension when tee times allow.

Accommodations

There is no on-course resort, so the best format is a centrally located hotel in the Mansfield/Annesley area. The mour Hotel is practical for all four core courses, while Forest Lodge Hotel in Edwinstowe suits groups that want Sherwood Forest and the Robin Hood Country setting close at hand.

Resort amenities

This is a club-led golf destination rather than a single resort. Each core course has its own traditional clubhouse and practice offering, while the Links-style simplicity of the trip comes from staying centrally and playing a different course each day.

  • Visitor tee times by advance reservation
  • Practice facilities at each core club
  • Traditional golf clubhouses
  • Central Mansfield lodging base

Add ancient woodland, historic estates or an evening in Nottingham to a course-focused break.

Getting there

East Midlands Airport (EMA) is the closest airport, roughly 45 minutes by car to the Mansfield golf base. Birmingham Airport (BHX) and Manchester Airport (MAN) are useful alternatives for broader flight schedules, and a rental car or private driver is recommended between courses and hotels.

Best time to visit

May through September is the prime window, when the heathland is firm, fast and at its most visually defined. April and October can be excellent value shoulder-season options; book early for summer weekday tee times.

Who it's best for

Buddies trips, architecture-minded golfers, and UK visitors looking for a high-quality heathland break away from the better-known circuits.

Planning Your Nottinghamshire Golf Trip

Which courses should anchor a Nottinghamshire golf trip?

Hollinwell, Sherwood Forest and Coxmoor are the essential three. Worksop is the natural fourth round for a longer stay, while Lindrick is a premium optional extension across the South Yorkshire border.

Can visitors play the courses?

Yes. Hollinwell, Sherwood Forest, Coxmoor and Worksop all accept visitor play, but tee-time policies vary by day and season. Advance booking is especially important for summer dates and larger groups.

How long should we stay?

Two nights is enough for three core rounds. Stay three nights if you want to play all four Nottinghamshire courses without rushing, or add another night for Lindrick and time in Nottingham or Sherwood Forest.

When is the best time to play?

May through September gives the best chance of firm, fast heathland conditions. April and October are excellent shoulder-season choices, while winter play depends more on weather and each club's tee-time policy.

Where should a group stay?

Stay near Mansfield or Annesley for the easiest course access. The mour Hotel works well as a central group base; Forest Lodge Hotel is a more characterful option near Edwinstowe and Sherwood Forest.
