The #1 ranked course in Wales and a fixture in the world top 100, Royal Porthcawl is a wild, full-on links where every hole has a view of the Bristol Channel. Founded in 1891, it has hosted the Senior Open multiple times and most recently the 2025 AIG Women's Open, won by Miyu Yamashita. Currently sitting at 65th in the world rankings.

An ageing, mature links squeezed between dunes and the Somerset estuary, Burnham & Berrow has been a fixture in The Open Final Qualifying Series for years — most famously when Justin Rose's 2024 qualifying run was captured on Netflix's 'Full Swing'. Recent course work includes new rugged-style bunkering and rebuilds of the 6th, 13th, 14th and 16th greens, a redesigned 12th hole, and a series of new tee complexes. Currently #26 in England and #62 in the UK & Ireland.

The more demanding of Saunton's two championship layouts and considered by many the best 18 in the southwest. Stretched over towering Braunton Burrows dunes with little respite, the East rewards bold, well-shaped ball-striking. Has improved year-on-year and now sits at 23rd in England and 53rd in the UK & Ireland.

Saunton Golf Club (East Course)
  • #23 in England, #53 in UK & Ireland
  • Played through the largest dune system in England (Braunton Burrows UNESCO Reserve)
  • Past venue, West of England Amateur Championship

Saunton Golf Club (West Course)

The 'easier' Saunton — though only by reputation. Frank Pennink's later layout sits on the same epic terrain, with tighter target zones, slightly more elevation change, and arguably more visual drama. Continues to climb the rankings, now sitting at 56th in England and a regular winner of player polls in the southwest.

Saunton Golf Club (West Course)
  • #56 in England
  • Sits in the same Braunton Burrows dune system as the East
  • Often paired with the East as a 36-hole day

England's oldest golf club (1864) and the spiritual home of links golf in the southwest, played on common land at Westward Ho! that grazes sheep and horses to this day. In 2025 it hosted the 136th Varsity Match between Oxford and Cambridge — a quietly historic event on a quietly historic course. Holds a steady #63 in England.

Tucked into the dunes above the Camel Estuary in Rock, the Church Course is named for the half-buried 12th-century chapel beside the 10th green. Recent restoration of the famous Himalaya bunker on the 6th — designed to recover its former shape while honouring the natural roll of the dunes — has elevated an already-celebrated layout. Finalist for England Course of the Year 2025 and now at #49 in the world top 100.

Continued investment in layout improvements has seen Trevose become a Top 100 England course (#69) and a finalist for Resort of the Year 2025. A friendly, group-perfect base on the cliffs at Constantine Bay.

Getting there

London Heathrow (LHR) is the practical entry point — a 2.5-hour private transfer to Royal Porthcawl, where the trip begins. From Cornwall at the trip's end, it's a 4.5-hour drive back up to Heathrow on the final day; we typically position you at the Hyatt Place Heathrow the night before the morning flight. Bristol Airport (BRS) is a viable alternative for groups arriving from European hubs.

Best time to visit
Peak window is May through September, with stable weather, longer daylight, and the firmest, fastest links conditions. The hosted 2026 departure is April 18–27, when courses are quiet, turf is firming up, and the gorse is in bloom. Late September and early October offer beautiful autumn colour and excellent value but expect more variable weather. Winter is playable but daylight is short.
Who it's best for
Buddies trips chasing GB&I's most underrated links. Bucket-list golfers who've already played St Andrews and want to discover the southwest's quieter top-100s. Architecture nerds drawn to the Fowler / Colt / Braid / Pennink lineage that runs through the entire itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions about Southwest England & South Wales

When is the best time of year to play this trip?

April through October. Spring (April–May) brings firm, fast turf and the longest light; September is the locals' pick — quiet courses, mild weather, and early autumn colour on the dunes. Our hosted 2026 departure is April 18–27.

Which airport should we fly into?

London Heathrow (LHR) is the most practical hub. From Heathrow it's roughly 2.5 hours by private car to Royal Porthcawl, where the trip begins. We arrange the transfer as part of the land package.

Are caddies available?

Yes — caddies can be pre-booked at every club on the itinerary. Caddie fees and gratuities are paid directly on the day and are not part of the land package. We'll confirm availability and current rates before you travel.

What's included in the land package?

Eight nights' accommodation across the hotels listed, 8 rounds of golf with full green fees and pre-booked tee times, and all transport between courses and hotels (including Heathrow pickup and drop-off). Caddies and flights are the two notable exclusions.

Is this trip suitable for higher-handicap golfers?

Yes — these are honest, walkable links courses where smart course-management beats raw distance. Saunton East and Royal Porthcawl are the most demanding from the back tees; we'll help your group choose the right tees on each course.

How fit do I need to be?

Reasonably fit. Most rounds are walking-only or strongly walking-preferred, and the dunes terrain at Saunton, St Enodoc, and Perranporth involves real elevation change. Trolleys and caddies are available almost everywhere.

Can I customise the dates and itinerary?

Absolutely. The April 2026 hosted departure is one option, but we run this trip on custom dates throughout the year for private groups of 4–16 players. Tell us when you'd like to travel and we'll build it around you.
