Set on the relatively flat floor of the Chamonix valley, Golf Club de Chamonix plays beneath the Mont Blanc massif and the Aiguilles Rouges. Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed the current 18-hole layout around alpine streams, mature trees, strategic bunkering and frequently elevated, well-defended greens. The club began as a four-hole course in 1934, expanded to nine holes in 1935 and inaugurated its present 18-hole course in 1982.

What to Expect at Chamonix–Mont-Blanc

Why visit

Golf Club de Chamonix offers something unusual: a walkable valley-floor course framed by glaciers and steep Alpine peaks. Robert Trent Jones Sr. shaped the 18-hole layout around streams, trees and strategically placed bunkers, while the surrounding scenery gives nearly every hole a distinctive sense of place. The destination works best as a two- or three-night stop rather than a golf-only resort. Play the course, ride the Aiguille du Midi cable car, visit the Mer de Glace or spend a day hiking before continuing toward Geneva, Lake Geneva, Megève or northern Italy.

Accommodations

Chamonix has a broad range of hotels, chalets and apartments. Hotel Le Labrador is the most golf-focused choice because it sits beside the course in Les Praz, while central Chamonix offers easier access to restaurants, shops and mountain lifts.

What is the best time of year for golf in Chamonix?

June through September is generally the best period for golf and summer mountain activities. Exact course conditions and opening dates depend on weather and can vary from year to year.

Which airport should golfers use for Chamonix?

Geneva Airport is the main international gateway. The road transfer is approximately 100 kilometres and normally takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, depending on traffic and weather.

Do we need a rental car in Chamonix?

Not necessarily. Airport transfers, local buses and taxis can support a Chamonix-only stay. A rental car or private driver becomes more useful when adding Geneva, Megève, Courmayeur or other regional stops.

Hotel Le Labrador is located beside Golf Club de Chamonix in Les Praz, making it the most convenient lodging option for a golf-focused stay.

How long should a Chamonix golf trip be?

Two to three nights is a good fit for one round of golf and one or two mountain experiences. Chamonix also works well as part of a longer France, Switzerland or northern Italy itinerary.

Is Golf Club de Chamonix a mountain course?

It has a dramatic mountain setting but is laid out largely on the relatively flat valley floor. The course plays as a tree-lined Alpine parkland layout rather than a steep hillside course.

What should golfers do away from the course?

Popular additions include the Aiguille du Midi cable car, the Montenvers railway and Mer de Glace, guided hiking, central Chamonix and a day trip through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to Courmayeur.

Can Chamonix be combined with golf in Switzerland or Italy?

Yes. Geneva and the Lake Geneva area are natural extensions to the west, while Courmayeur and the Aosta Valley can be reached through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to the south.

Are mountain attractions guaranteed to operate?

No. Cable cars, railways and high-mountain activities may close because of wind, weather, maintenance or seasonal schedules. Flexible planning is important, and live operating information should be checked before each activity.
