Stockholm — overview

Stockholm combines a world-class Nordic city break with three distinct golf experiences: lakefront Ullna, the modern Stenson-designed courses at Österåker and forest-lined Ingarö. Ullna is a lakefront championship course north of Stockholm, with water shaping the strategy on much of the routing along Lake Ullnasjön. Swedish sports icon Sven Tumba created the original course, which opened in 1981, before Jack Nicklaus led an extensive redesign completed in 2013. The club has hosted the Scandinavian Enterprise Open, the Eisenhower Trophy and the 2023 Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed.

Öster by Stenson is the marquee modern layout at Österåker Golf Club, created by Henrik Stenson and course architect Christian Lundin as part of the club's complete redevelopment. Opened in 2018, the broad championship course uses large hazards, bold green complexes and risk-reward decisions inspired in part by tournament venues such as Le Golf National and TPC Sawgrass. It hosted the Dormy Open on the Challenge Tour in 2021.

Skogsbanan winds through hilly woodland on Ingarö, giving the round a quiet archipelago character with few visual intrusions from roads or buildings. Designed by Björn Ericsson and opened in 1992, the par-70 layout rewards placement and accuracy more than raw distance. Its narrow playing corridors and undulating greens create a distinctly different test from Stockholm's broader modern championship courses.

The Stadium Course is Robert Trent Jones Jr.'s expansive lakeside championship layout on the shores of Lake Mälaren. Opened in 2007, it stretches to more than 8,000 yards from the back tees and uses sweeping bunkers, exposed greens and water hazards to create a demanding but visually dramatic test. The course hosted multiple editions of the Scandinavian Masters and Nordea Masters on the European Tour.

The Castle Course is Bro Hof Slott's more compact, links-inspired companion to the Stadium Course. Robert Trent Jones Jr. routed the course across rolling ground around the historic estate, using deep bunkers, firm playing surfaces and strategic angles rather than extreme length as its primary defense. Opened in 2010, it offers a distinct second round at one of Sweden's leading 36-hole facilities.

Fågelbro is an 18-hole parkland and woodland course on Värmdö in the Stockholm archipelago. Björn Eriksson's 1991 design moves through mature forest and around natural water features, with narrow corridors and carefully positioned hazards favoring controlled play. A major renovation completed in 2025 refreshed the course while retaining its established archipelago character.

Royal Drottningholm occupies royal land on Lovön beside Drottningholm Palace and Lake Mälaren. Rafael Sundblom and Nils Sköld created the original course in 1959, while Johan Benestam led a comprehensive modernization completed in 2012. Its parkland setting and championship history include European Tour, Ladies European Tour and major international amateur events.

What to Expect at Stockholm

Why visit

Stockholm gives golfers three very different rounds without sacrificing the appeal of a major European city. Ullna Golf Club follows Lake Ullnasjön and was extensively redesigned by Jack Nicklaus; Österåker Golf Club offers Öster by Stenson and Västerled, two modern courses shaped by Henrik Stenson Golf Design; and Ingarö Golf Club provides a secluded forest-and-meadow setting toward the archipelago. Between rounds, groups can explore Gamla Stan, visit the Vasa Museum, dine along the waterfront or take a boat into the islands. It is especially strong as the opening leg of a wider Scandinavian itinerary.

Accommodations

Most groups should stay in central Stockholm for the strongest dining and sightseeing experience, then arrange golf transfers. Biz Apartment Bromma is a practical aparthotel option for longer stays, while the city center offers everything from design-led boutique hotels to landmark luxury properties.

Resort amenities

The featured clubs provide full-length courses, practice areas, clubhouses and food service. Ullna is an 18-hole lakefront championship venue; Österåker is a 36-hole facility with Öster by Stenson and Västerled; and Ingarö offers two contrasting courses in a natural setting east of the city. Because the courses are spread across the metropolitan area, transportation should be planned as part of the package.

Frequently Asked Questions about Stockholm

Which golf courses are included in the Stockholm destination?

The featured clubs are Ullna Golf Club, Österåker Golf Club and Ingarö Golf Club. Österåker and Ingarö each have two full-length courses, so the exact layouts can be matched to availability and trip length.

What is the best time of year for a Stockholm golf trip?

Late May through September is the main golf period. June through August provides the longest daylight and generally the warmest weather, while May and September may offer quieter conditions.

How many nights should golfers spend in Stockholm?

Four nights is a strong starting point for three rounds and meaningful time in the city. Five nights allows a more relaxed schedule or a dedicated archipelago day.

Do we need a rental car to play golf around Stockholm?

The courses sit outside central Stockholm, so a rental car or prearranged golf transfers are recommended. Public transportation is excellent in the city but is less convenient when carrying clubs to multiple courses.

Which Stockholm airport should international golfers use?

Stockholm Arlanda Airport is the primary international gateway. It is approximately 40 kilometres north of central Stockholm and has rail, coach, taxi and private-transfer connections.

Is Ullna Golf Club open to visiting golfers?

Visitor access should be confirmed for the requested date before the itinerary is finalized. JEL Golf Travel can coordinate availability and tee-time requirements directly with the club or its booking partners.

Which course should we play at Österåker?

Öster by Stenson is the marquee modern layout and the usual first choice for a destination itinerary. Västerled provides a second Henrik Stenson Golf Design option when adding another round or when access dictates.

Can golfers stay in central Stockholm?

Yes. Central lodging gives groups the best access to restaurants, nightlife and sightseeing. The tradeoff is a longer road transfer to each course, which should be built into the daily schedule.

What can non-golfers do during the trip?

Stockholm offers museums, shopping, historic neighborhoods, waterfront dining, parks and archipelago excursions, making it one of the stronger European golf destinations for couples or mixed-interest groups.

Can Stockholm be combined with other Scandinavian golf destinations?

Yes. Stockholm works particularly well before or after Lofoten, Oslo, Copenhagen or another Swedish golf region, with direct air and rail connections supporting a larger Nordic itinerary.
