Queenstown & Central Otago — overview

Queenstown & Central Otago pairs dramatic alpine golf with one of New Zealand’s great food-and-wine regions. Jack’s Point, Millbrook’s two courses and Arrowtown create a strong resort-to-wine-country route, with Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables and Central Otago Pinot Noir shaping everything around the rounds.

Jack’s Point is John Darby’s dramatic par-72 course on Lake Wakatipu, played beneath the Remarkables mountain range south of Queenstown. Its design follows the natural tussock grassland, rock and lake edge rather than imposing a conventional resort shape on the site. The result is the signature scenic round in the Queenstown area and a demanding test when wind is up.

Remarkables is Millbrook’s original 18-hole course, created by John Darby and Sir Bob Charles and later refined within the resort’s broader 36-hole evolution. It plays through the Wakatipu Basin beneath the Crown Range and Remarkables, mixing water, fast greens and generous alpine-scale views. For a stay-and-play trip, it is the foundational Millbrook round.

Coronet is Millbrook’s newer full 18, designed by Greg Turner and Scott Macpherson from the original Coronet nine and the Mill Farm expansion. It is the more topographically dramatic companion to Remarkables, climbing into higher ground with tussock, streams, schist and broad mountain views. Playing both Millbrook courses adds real variety without changing hotels.

Arrowtown is the local counterpoint to the resort courses: a shorter, older par-70 where narrow fairways, uneven lies and mountain-framed shots matter more than raw yardage. Nicknamed ‘Narrowtown,’ it has real personality, with old stone cottage ruins and rugged ground close to the historic gold-rush town. Green-fee visitors are welcome year-round, making it a useful fourth round for a Queenstown itinerary.

What to Expect at Queenstown & Central Otago

Why visit

Queenstown is one of the rare golf destinations where the non-golf days can be as memorable as the rounds. Jack’s Point sits on Lake Wakatipu beneath the Remarkables, while Millbrook gives a group two distinct 18-hole courses and a full luxury resort base near Arrowtown. Add the historic town, Gibbston Valley and the broader Central Otago wine region, and there is a natural rhythm to a five- to seven-night trip: golf in the morning, winery lunch or an outdoor experience in the afternoon, then dinner back in Queenstown or at the resort. The Hills remains an important long-term course for this area, but it is currently closed for redevelopment, so JEL will not treat it as part of an active itinerary until it reopens.

Accommodations

Millbrook Resort is the most seamless stay-and-play base, while Rosewood Matakauri gives couples and smaller groups a more intimate lakefront Queenstown option. A wine-country stay at Gibbston Valley Lodge & Spa can add a different final chapter to a longer itinerary.

Resort amenities

Millbrook is the region’s most complete golf-resort base, pairing two 18-hole layouts with accommodation, dining, spa and practice facilities. Jack’s Point brings a different kind of round—open, exposed and spectacularly placed beside Lake Wakatipu—while Queenstown supplies the dining, lake access and outdoor experiences that turn a golf itinerary into a proper South Island stay.

This is a destination to slow down in: winery lunches, Arrowtown, lake experiences and alpine scenery deserve their own time.

Getting there

Fly into Queenstown Airport (ZQN), roughly 15 minutes from central Queenstown. Jack’s Point is about 20 minutes south of town, while Millbrook and Arrowtown are around 25 minutes away; private transfers are an easy option, though self-drive works well for groups planning winery stops.

Best time to visit

November through April offers the most dependable golf window, long daylight and the best conditions for wine-country lunches and lake activities. March and April are especially strong for harvest season, autumn colour around Arrowtown and fewer peak-summer crowds.

Queenstown Golf Trip FAQs

Useful planning details for a South Island golf and wine-country itinerary.

Which courses should anchor a Queenstown golf trip?

The active core is Jack’s Point plus Millbrook Resort’s Remarkables and Coronet courses. Arrowtown Golf Club can be added for a lower-key local round or a fourth round.

Is The Hills available to play?

The Hills is currently closed for redevelopment from April 2026 for two years. JEL will not plan it into an itinerary until the course confirms it has reopened and visitor access is available again.

How long should we stay in Queenstown and Central Otago?

Five to seven nights is the sweet spot. That allows three rounds of golf without rushing and leaves time for Arrowtown, Central Otago wineries and at least one lake or mountain experience.

When is the best time for a Queenstown golf and wine trip?

November through April is the primary golf season. March and April are particularly good for wine harvest, autumn colour and a slightly slower feel than peak summer.

Do we need a car in Queenstown?

Not necessarily. Queenstown, Jack’s Point and Millbrook are close enough for private transfers, which also makes wine-country days much easier. A self-drive itinerary is a good fit for independent travellers who want more flexibility.
