3-Day Kohler Golf Trip Itinerary: Whistling Straits & More

Plan three golf days at Destination Kohler with a smart route through Whistling Straits, Blackwolf Run and The Baths, plus lodging and travel advice.

Quick Answer

This 3-day Kohler golf trip itinerary is best for a group that wants to experience the core of Destination Kohler without turning every day into a 36-hole marathon. The strongest three-day version uses one lodging base in Kohler, plays the Irish on Day 1, gives the Straits its own day, and finishes at Blackwolf Run on Day 3, with The Baths and an optional second round at Meadow Valleys worked in around the group's energy and travel schedule.

For most groups, plan on three golf days and three nights so arrival and departure do not force the marquee rounds into bad positions.

Trip Overview

Kohler does not require hotel changes to create variety. Whistling Straits has the Straits and Irish courses along Lake Michigan, while Blackwolf Run has the River and Meadow Valleys courses inland near the Village of Kohler. The Baths adds a 10-hole par-3 option at Blackwolf Run.

Our preferred three-day framework is:

  • Day 1: Irish Course + The Baths
  • Day 2: Straits Course
  • Day 3: River Course + optional Meadow Valleys

That gives first-time visitors the three courses we would prioritize most while still leaving room to play all four championship courses if the group wants a more aggressive final day.

Destination Kohler's current To Dye Four package uses a similar full-resort concept, combining three nights with the Straits, River, Irish, Meadow Valleys, and The Baths. For a custom trip, however, the exact order should follow available golf, arrival times, and how much walking the group wants.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive, Play the Irish and Add The Baths

Make the first day the easier transition into the trip.

After arriving in Kohler and settling into the resort, play the Irish Course at Whistling Straits. It gives the group its first look at the Whistling Straits property without using the trip's headline round immediately after a travel morning.

The Irish allows golf carts, weather permitting, which also makes it easier to handle on an arrival day than the walking-only Straits. For 2026, carts are listed at $50 per player when they are not already part of a package arrangement.

If arrival timing and daylight cooperate, add The Baths later in the day. The 10-hole par-3 course is walking-only, with complimentary pull carts and rental clubs and putters available. It is the kind of relaxed short-course golf that has become a key part of modern golf trips, especially when the group wants to keep playing without committing to another full 18.

Stay in Kohler and keep the evening open for dinner rather than adding more driving.

Whistling Straits - Straits Course

Day 2 — Make the Straits the Main Event

Day 2 should revolve around the Straits Course.

The Straits is walking-only, golf carts are not permitted, and caddies are highly recommended. Destination Kohler's 2026 policies list a $90 caddie fee per player with a recommended $70 gratuity per bag.

Because this is the round most groups are traveling to Kohler to play, we would avoid automatically pairing it with another championship 18. Give the group time to warm up, enjoy the course, and stay for a drink or meal afterward instead of racing to the next tee.

This pacing is especially important if the golfers are not accustomed to walking demanding resort courses. The goal is to make Whistling Straits the highlight of the trip, not simply one stop in an overloaded schedule.

Use the second night for the resort experience. A Kohler trip works well because the group can golf hard during the day without needing to repack or transfer to another hotel.

Day 3 — River Course, Then Decide How Much Golf Is Left

Finish at Blackwolf Run with the River Course.

The move inland gives the trip a different look after two days at Whistling Straits. The River plays through the Sheboygan River valley and creates the strongest contrast to the exposed Straits setting, which is why we would prioritize it for a first three-day trip.

If the group wants the complete four-course Kohler experience, add Meadow Valleys as the second round on Day 3. This is the most demanding version of the itinerary, so it works best when departure is the following morning rather than immediately after golf.

If the group would rather finish at a better pace, play only the River and leave Meadow Valleys for a longer return trip. That usually produces a better three-day experience than forcing 36 holes just to check every course off the list.

Groups turning Kohler into a longer Wisconsin golf trip can also use the extra day to continue toward Erin Hills or build in a contrasting round at Lac La Belle.

Where to Stay

Keep one lodging base for the entire itinerary.

The American Club is the classic choice for a premium Kohler trip and puts the group into the full resort experience.

Inn on Woodlake has a more contemporary feel and offers rooms and multibedroom suites that can work well for buddy groups. Destination Kohler's resort-fee inclusions at both properties include shuttle service throughout the resort, so there is little reason to change hotels simply because the golf moves between Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run.

The choice should come down to room configuration, budget, and the type of resort experience the group wants.

Routing and Transportation

For a Kohler-only trip, the best logistics are simple: arrive, establish one lodging base, and use the resort as the hub.

Whistling Straits lists Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport at approximately 72 miles, Green Bay's Austin Straubel International Airport at 58 miles, and Chicago O'Hare at 142 miles. Inn on Woodlake lists similar access, at 64 miles from Milwaukee, 66 from Green Bay, and 132 from O'Hare.

Milwaukee and Green Bay are therefore the cleanest flight gateways for most groups. Chicago can make sense when flight options or a larger Midwest itinerary justify the longer drive.

Once in Kohler, resort shuttle service helps connect lodging and resort facilities. Avoid adding another Wisconsin destination inside these three golf days unless the group is willing to sacrifice one of the Kohler rounds.

Booking Timeline

Secure the Straits and lodging combination first. Those are the pieces we would use to anchor the rest of the itinerary.

After the Straits is in place, fit the Irish and River around it, then decide whether Meadow Valleys and The Baths should be added based on the group's appetite for extra golf.

Destination Kohler recommends advance reservations for several components of its golf packages, including dining, and package golf lessons require advance reservations. The resort's public 2026 pages do not state one universal booking window that applies to every golf trip, so groups should not rely on an arbitrary number of months.

For prime summer and fall dates or groups needing consecutive tee times, start planning as soon as the group can commit.

Planning Tips

  • Anchor the trip with the Straits, then build the other rounds around it.
  • Do not put the Straits on a rushed arrival or departure day.
  • Use The Baths on Day 1 when travel timing allows.
  • Treat Meadow Valleys as the optional fourth championship round if the group wants 36 holes on Day 3.
  • Keep one lodging base instead of changing hotels.
  • Budget for caddies and gratuities before the trip, not after arrival.
  • If this is part of a larger Midwest buddy trip, add extra nights rather than sacrificing Kohler golf to create more driving.

FAQ

Can you play all four Kohler championship courses in three days?

Yes. The most logical version is Irish on Day 1, Straits on Day 2, then River and Meadow Valleys on Day 3. It is a golf-heavy itinerary, so we prefer three nights with departure the following morning.

Which course should have its own day?

The Straits. It is walking-only and is usually the round the group cares about most. Giving it a dedicated day makes the trip feel less rushed.

Is The Baths worth fitting into a three-day itinerary?

Yes, when timing works. Its 10-hole format makes it much easier to add than another championship round, particularly on arrival day.

Should we stay at The American Club or Inn on Woodlake?

Both work for this route. The American Club is the classic luxury choice; Inn on Woodlake can be particularly practical for golf groups that want contemporary rooms or multibedroom suites.

Should we add Erin Hills to a three-day Kohler itinerary?

Not usually. For only three golf days, we would stay focused on Kohler. If Erin Hills is a priority, extend the trip rather than dropping a key Kohler round and spending more of the itinerary in transit.
